The Governor established the Maryland Commission for Celebration 2000 in June 1997 (Executive Order 01.01.1997.02). The Commission is to identify and highlight the diverse contributions and achievements of Marylanders, and celebrate their rich cultural heritage. To prepare for the 21st century, the Commission will help Marylanders enter the millennium with an understanding of their history.
The Commission will promote, support, and coordinate the efforts of individuals, groups, and institutions to celebrate the contributions of Marylanders. While planning and executing special events, the Commission also will serve as a clearinghouse of information about millennium activities statewide.
