The Task Force on Multiracial Designations was created by statute in 1996 and appointed in 1997 (Chapter 300, Acts of 1996). The charge of the Task Force was to consider the addition of a multiracial category to State government forms that identify people by race. The Task Force submitted its findings and recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly on December 1, 1997.

The Task Force consisted of thirteen members. Nine were appointed by the Governor, two by the Senate President, and two by the House Speaker. The Governor named the chair.
