The Maryland State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was established in accordance with the federal Civil Rights Act of 1957 (sec. 105(c)). Since 1957, the Committee has advised the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about discrimination or denial of the equal protection law based on race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, or national origin. The Committee also keeps the U.S. Commission informed about the administration of justice in Maryland.

Appointed by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, the Committee has thirteen members who serve two-year terms.
