The Office on Volunteerism was formed in 1986. It was placed under the Office of the Lieutenant Governor in January 1997.
The Office provides support for volunteer programs in public and private agencies throughout Maryland (Chapter 13, Acts of 1986). The Office provides information and referrals to individuals and program staff; sponsors conferences and workshops for administrators, staff, and volunteers; and coordinates recognition events and award ceremonies. The Office also administers the Volunteer Maryland Program, a National Community Service Demonstration Project (Code State Government Article, secs. 9-1301 through 9-1310).
VOLUNTEER MARYLAND
Volunteer Maryland recruits coordinators and associates who dedicate a year of public service to Volunteer Maryland. After training in volunteer management and empowerment techniques, teams of coordinators and associates are placed in government and private nonprofit agencies to strengthen their volunteer programs.
Governor's Coordinating Offices
Volunteer Maryland was created in 1993 by the Governor's Advisory Board on Service and Citizenship. Volunteer Maryland is one of seven demonstration projects of national service around the country funded by the federal Commission on National and Community Service. The project also is supported by private contributions.
